When I was 10, my life changed for the better. I was introduced to Brian McKnight, and I haven’t looked back. He’s my favorite artist, and in my eyes you can’t get any better than him. Don’t ask me why I was 10 listening to Brian belt out love songs. This week’s edition of Weeknight Date Night was selected by Anthony, and we went to the Brian McKnight concert for my birthday.

If you haven’t noticed by now, birthdays are sort of a big deal to me. Blame my mom! When my brother and I were younger she made a point to make us feel extra special on our day, and everything was all about the birthday boy/girl. October 2011 was the first birthday Anthony and I celebrated as a couple. I can’t remember what we did, but I do remember I was upset. I thought, that’s it? I think we went to dinner, and he got me a gift. I know you’re thinking what’s wrong with that. Well, for me it’s all about the experience. So, after that one birthday mishap Anthony has created memorable experiences for my special day. Way to go Hutch!

First, I went to the hospital to do my birthday good deed. Every year, I write a letter and give money to nurse to give to a family that has a child on my birthday. After the good deed was done, Anthony and I hit the road to head to the concert. We had a quick dinner, and then it was show time. Brian stepped on stage with his guitar, and I felt like that happy 10 year old again. He sang all the classics, told us personal life stories and interacted with the crowd. His voice is AMAZING in person!!! There were a few times Anthony was doing a little two-step and swaying from side to side. Hey, Brian will make anybody feel all the love.

He talked about writing his first love song at 14, and singing them throughout the years while being a bad husband during his first marriage. There’s a lesson there. We can be a blessing to someone while we’re going through a storm. Brian’s music was always so soothing, and the older I got the more I connected with the words. I didn’t experience heartbreak, but I could connect to the pain even at a younger age. Although my pain was somewhat trivial, it was still pain and his words helped. When I got older the love songs meant so much more. Now, as an adult I can relate to it all! It makes me appreciate my marriage, myself and my growth.

So, thanks Brian for providing hope, solace, romance and anticipation to little 10 year old Sheena. If you get a chance to see Brian McKnight live, don’t pass up that opportunity. He puts on an amazing show, and his vocals are insane. THOSE RUNS!!!!!

By the way, Anthony and I have a joint birthday trip coming up. The joys of being born 6 weeks apart.

Until next time loves…
