When I was a little girl growing up in the 90s, my mom was completely infatuated with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. He’s a multi-talented musical genius. I LOVE a good slow R&B songs. Do yall remember Midnight Love with Donnie Simpson and Sherry Carter? Before this post gets out of hand, let me talk about this week’s edition of Weeknight Date Night.

This week’s date night was selected by me, and I finally got to see Babyface in concert!!! When I found out he was coming to Nashville I thought, my mom has to go to the concert with me. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out because she’s coming to TN in a couple of weeks for her 40th high school reunion. Have yall seen my mom? She looks 45, but she’s knocking on 60’s door. Dear God, PLEASE pass those genes down to ya girl!!! Since my mom was unable to go to the concert with me I went for the next best thing…Anthony, of course.

We arrived at the concert and immediately noticed the age gap between us and the other concert patrons. Two ladies sat down beside us and I turned to them and said, “Are yall ready to PARTY!!!” They laughed and asked me what I was doing at the concert lol. I told them my mom raised me right.

The lights dimmed and I heard “My Kinda Girl” playing, and I SCREAMED!!! My Kinda Girl is a song from Babyface’s 1989 Tender Lover album. Yeah, you read that correctly 1989. Babyface appeared on stage in a fuschia blazer and black slacks. He did a few little two steps, and I was feeling it lol. What’s a Babyface concert without Whip Appeal? I think the audience was the loudest during that song. He talked to us the whole night (which I loved). He said the next song I’m going to sing is only for the true fan. He said he wrote the song when he was madly in love. I looked at Anthony and said, I don’t know what the song is, but if he was madly in love when he wrote it then I’m dedicating it to you. The first few beats played and I completely LOST it! It was my favorite Babyface song, Sunshine. It’s also on the Tender Lover album. The ladies looked at me and said how do you know this song? Again, my mom raised me right. Anthony and I went to see Neyo a couple of years ago and during his show he performed a medley of songs he had written. I leaned over and asked Anthony if he thought Babyface would do the same thing. He did, and I loved it! He went back to the late 70s all the way to the early 2000s. He performed hits from Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, The Whispers, Dru Hill, Boys II Men, The Deele and After 7 just to name a few. He finished that set and then thanked the crowd and walked off stage. I thought this can’t be the end.

A few minutes later he reappeared with his guitar and he carried us home with “When Can I See You Again”. Anthony claims this is his favorite Babyface song (side-eye), but I’m not too sure about that. Speaking of Anthony I was so appreciative that he was my stand in for my mom. I know this wasn’t his type of concert, but he did it for me.

After the concert I called my mom and we gushed over Babyface the rest of the night. The concert was definitely one of my favorites. What’s your favorite Babyface song?

Until next time loves…
